Sports & Exercise Cardiology

Athlete screening, inherited arrhythmias and exercise prescription.

Sports cardiology balances the cardioprotective effects of exercise against diagnostic challenges in remodeled athletes. Sessions address pre-participation ECG screening (ESC vs AHA), differentiation of athlete's heart from HCM, ARVC, and DCM using CMR and genotype, and shared decision-making for return-to-play in inherited arrhythmia syndromes following the 2024 AHA/ACC guidelines. Masters athlete content covers exercise-induced AF, accelerated coronary calcification in lifelong endurance athletes, and post-myocarditis return-to-play, including post-COVID and post-vaccine cohorts.

Focus areas
  • Pre-participation screening: ECG criteria, ESC vs AHA
  • Athlete's heart vs HCM, ARVC, and DCM
  • Inherited arrhythmias: LQTS, CPVT, Brugada in athletes
  • AF and coronary calcification in masters athletes
  • Return-to-play after myocarditis and SCD events
  • Exercise prescription in established CV disease
  • Shared decision-making and 2024 RTP guidelines
